Death Mask

A Face Frozen in Time

A death mask captures the unique expression and likeness of a person after their passing. It is not just a cast – it is a quiet yet powerful remembrance and a dignified way of honouring the deceased. We offer professional sculptural work that preserves the likeness of your loved ones forever.

The Importance of Time and the Course of the Process

In post-mortem casting, time is the key factor. After death the body gradually loses elasticity and undergoes natural changes, which is why a quick decision is necessary. We are ready to respond flexibly and arrive on site as soon as possible.

Where and how is the cast taken?

The process is as discreet and respectful as possible. Location: we carry out casting exclusively on the premises of a crematorium or funeral home. Supervision: an authorised person (usually a funeral service employee) who prepares the body is always present. Timing: the ideal time is just before cremation or burial (after the ceremony).

Ethical and Technical Conditions

We maintain high ethical standards. It is not appropriate to make a cast of persons whose appearance has been significantly altered by a long illness or injury, or if the body has been kept in refrigerated storage for a long time. In such cases deformations may occur that would not correspond to the memory you wish to preserve.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When can the cast be made?

We recommend acting as soon as possible after death. The cast can be made if:
– The face of the deceased is well preserved.
– The face is not damaged by injury.
– The body is in a condition suitable for the casting process.
When a cast is not possible:
If the deceased has a long beard and moustache (technical limitations) or if significant post-mortem changes are present.

What is the extent of the cast area?

As standard, we capture the face (without ears), part of the neck and chest. A fragment of the funeral clothing (jacket collar, tie) may also be included. Note on clothing: the casting compound requires a release layer of oil or Vaseline. These substances leave permanent stains on textiles. That is why we ideally carry out the casting after the ceremony, just before cremation, when soiling of the clothing is not an issue. No traces remain on the body itself after the process.

Can hair, moustache and beard be cast?

Stubble up to 3 mm: no problem. Longer beard, moustache and hair: these require demanding preparation with special gels, creating a so-called “stylised wet look”. With this technique it is not possible to achieve a completely realistic, fluffy look of the hair as in life.

What material will the final sculpture be made of?

We offer two options depending on placement:
1. Indoor – Epoxy cast (plaster composite)
A combination of epoxy and plaster. This material is indistinguishable from plaster, but is reinforced with epoxy, so it has the properties of plastic. It is durable, has an unlimited lifespan and allows various surface finishes. Delivery within 21 days.
2. Outdoor – Bronze cast. Ideal for placement on a gravestone.
Bronze is a noble metal that is extremely resistant to corrosion and weather. Over time it acquires a natural patina (protective layer) that gives it aesthetic value and protects it. Production takes approx. 3 months.

How to order the service?

First of all, it is necessary to verify whether a mask can be made at your funeral home. The easiest way is to contact me directly – I can handle all communication with the funeral service for you.
