Body Casting Design:

When the Human Body Becomes Art

The Czech portal Medium.seznam.cz published an interview with Slovak sculptor Slavomír Gibej about the body casting technique, artistic body casts, intimate casts and the making of death masks.

Body casting is an artistic technique that makes it possible to capture the real human body with authentic details, skin texture and natural form. Unlike classical modelling, it is created by directly casting a real body, so every result carries the unique character of a specific person.

Slavomír Gibej has been devoted to this technique for many years and has gradually transformed it into his own artistic style called Body Casting Design. In his work he combines a realistic cast of the human body with artistic treatment, relief, design and modern surface finishes.

A significant part of his work consists of casts of the female body and intimate casts, which he sees not as provocation, but as an authentic artistic statement about individuality, identity and the beauty of the human body. Each work is created as an original and often carries the personal story of the person it was made from.

Alongside artistic reliefs and sculptures, he also makes death masks. It is a historical technique for preserving a person’s final likeness, with strong emotional and documentary significance. Such casts create a lasting memory and an authentic record of the face of the deceased.

Today, body casting represents a combination of classical sculpture, craft and a modern artistic approach. Slavomír Gibej’s work shows that the human body need not be merely a model for art, but can become a direct part of it.
