The pose is the absolute foundation for achieving a perfect look.

Body casting is a magical process that freezes a moment in time and transforms it into a lasting sculpture. Whether it is a torso portrait or a specific part of the body, the resulting work is a tangible memory with deep emotional value. But before the mould is filled with the casting compound, the most important technical and artistic decision comes: Which body position to choose.

The Pose as the Key to Aesthetics and Success
As a sculptor specialising in body casting, I realise that the pose is everything. It is the key to the aesthetics, the design and the final beauty of the work. At the same time, it is the most difficult and most critical part of the whole process. If this initial phase is not mastered, all further work on the mould and the cast is completely useless.
While a photographer can choose from many shots and a painter can keep painting until satisfied, I have only one attempt at the setup. And the viewer has thousands of viewing angles. From every angle, the sculpture must look perfect. My goal is not to document the entire female body, but to make an artistic selection of part of it with an emphasis on design. Even a slight turn of the back changes the look of the sculpture dramatically. Moving an arm or turning the head fundamentally affects the final aesthetic impression and the silhouette.
Every body can be positioned to highlight its best features. By choosing a suitable backward lean, turning the body, supporting the body or raising an arm, we capture only what is important and beautiful.
Unlike full, three-dimensional sculptures we know from town squares, my body casting focuses on a relief look.
A relief sculpture, which captures the body from one side only, brings essential practical and aesthetic advantages. The main advantage is that the sculpture does not need its own space in the interior. Since the work sits neatly against the wall or is mounted on a backing board in a frame, it becomes more of a substitute for a painting. It is an elegant and modern part of interior design that isn’t obtrusive. From a practical point of view, a relief is easier to handle, transport and hang, and requires almost no maintenance. Artistically, a relief is focused and clean: it concentrates on the essence and makes it possible to emphasise the muscle contours and lines of the body with a dramatic effect of light and shadow, especially with spot lighting.

The Natural Body and the Battle with Gravity
The biggest mistake in casting a torso is choosing an unsuitable horizontal position. Gravity deforms the soft tissues that are to be depicted. When lying down, the contours flatten and spread , losing their natural dynamics. For this reason, a standing, leaning or specific seated position is the most natural, because the muscles keep their ideal silhouette. Although the standing position is technically the most demanding for the model, it produces the most faithful and striking relief. In addition, we always avoid a symmetrical depiction of the body. No body is perfectly symmetrical, and on a sculpture this difference is much more visible.
Comfort and Stability of the Model
Although the body looks best in relief, the model must hold the pose for 30 to 50 minutes – exactly until the mould has fully set. A pose is useless if the model cannot hold it without muscle cramps. Every position must be fixed at least at two points, otherwise there is a risk of the mould shifting and deforming. For example, the model should not stand with their weight on one leg or have an arm pressed underneath them, to avoid cutting off circulation and losing balance. When posing, it is also important to naturally cover the genitalswith a hand or another part of the body. This aesthetic decision is also practical for publishing on social media.

Take Your First Step
Body position is the first thing I discuss with every client, and it is an inseparable part of the artistic design. Only a correctly chosen pose combined with professional technique can guarantee that the final sculpture will be exactly as you imagine it – artistically striking and technically perfect.
